I’ll be back.

Clearly, 2004 has not been a good journal year for me. You’re looking at every entry right on this very page.

I picked up a book I read years ago and started reading it again. Page 39… “The intellectual atmosphere of both Cambridge and Boomsbury had been set by the philosopher G. E. Moore who taught that the aim of humans should be to cultivate beautiful states of mind — the pleasures of human intercourse and the enjoyment of exquisite objects. He had begun a lecture with the words ‘We should spread scepticism until at last everybody knows that we can know absolutely nothing.’ and then apparently had been overcome with laughter.” I’m beginning to remember why I loved the book so much the first time.

I’ll be back soon, I can feel it.

Chances are…

My dear friend (and fellow avid book-reader) Karen sent this to me. It’s too good not to share.

A couple goes on vacation to a fishing resort in northern Minnesota. The husband likes to fish at the crack of dawn. The wife likes to read.

One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book.

Along comes a law enforcement officer in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, “Good morning Ma’am. What are you doing?” “Reading a book,” she replies. “You’re in a restricted fishing area,” he informs her.

“I’m sorry officer, but I’m not fishing, I’m reading.” “Yes, but you have all the equipment. I’ll have to take you in and write you up.”

“If you do that, I’ll have to charge you with sexual assault,” says the woman. “But I haven’t even touched you,” says the officer. “That’s true, but you have all the equipment.”

MORAL: Never argue with a woman who reads. It’s likely she can also think.

Book-a-holic.

It’s surprising that I’ve accomplished anything the last few weeks because I’ve been shamelessly reading three 900+ page fantasy novels. (George R. R. Martin.) I know, not a genre I usually choose, but nonetheless, I’m utterly and completely engrossed. “What? Dinner, you say? I think there’s some Smoked Turkey in the refrigerator. Help yourself.” The fourth book hasn’t been published yet, which is probably a good thing.

Even if I wasn’t sitting with a book pressed to my nose, I’d be outside enjoying this awesome weather we’re having. It’s the perfect temperature. We had to have the pine tree in front of our house cut down. Some beetles killed it, poor thing didn’t stand a chance.

Empty boxes.

I never thought it possible that I could watch ski jumping for hours and hours…

Not much has been going on lately, that’s why I’ve been so quiet. We’re still waiting to hear where we might be moving this summer. In the meantime, I’ve decided to keep my mind off not knowing by tackling the attic. What’s the deal with the empty boxes I feel compelled to keep up there? As if I’ll have the perfect thing to ship to someone and it will just happen to fit perfectly in one of those boxes.

It’s raining, raining, raining here. Blah.

One good thing happened today: a box came from Amazon.com (oh no, another box) with the most recent Luka Bloom CD and a book entitled Living in Style Without Losing Your Mind. Another good thing: the night is still young.

Leftovers.

Dean and I finished reading Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone on Friday at 7 PM and promptly got in the car to see the 8 PM movie. It was so much fun. And today I have done absolutely nothing but read the second book, The Chamber of Secrets. Equally good. Over a year ago my most faithful friend Karen recommended the books. I should have dropped everything then. Sorry, Karen. It will never happen again.

Day three of Thanksgiving leftovers. Cindy warned me that I better make plenty of food because they all ate like horses. I took her seriously. We had them over again on Friday and there’s still enough turkey and stuffing to last three MORE days. I’m going to make turkey pot pie tomorrow and call it quits. At least the pumpkin chocolate cheesecake is almost gone. I would hate to throw that away. Heh.

Just a few more weeks and Eric will know whether the Air Force is going to sponsor his Radiology residency. The suspense is killing us. And right now I should be preparing for my class starting next weekend but I just can’t concentrate. What I’d really like to do is run to the bookstore for the third Harry Potter book.
